On one side of the MAK façade, Mittmannsgruber/Strauß have created an intervention which, for the duration of the exhibition, transforms the historic building into a “Plattenbau”, a building with façades constructed of large, prefabricated concrete slabs. Their object in doing so is to direct attention not only to the cheap, modular construction of mass housing – the ugly side of the worldwide phenomenon of increasing urbanization – but also, once again, to the dominance of advertising in public spaces: the giant tarpaulins that cover scaffolding on buildings under construction or renovation are otherwise used exclusively as advertising spaces – the most monumental form of commercial images or advertising logos in the urban environment. Mittmannsgruber/Strauß’ pictorial likeness of the anonymous, functional architecture found on city outskirts is conjoined with a comment on advertising as such. Moreover, the artists see this project as a symbolic service to the exhibition venue, the museum itself. It reflects the conditions under which art is created and presented today, and may be understood as a convincing metaphor for an economic situation.
